James Halliday Wine Companion 2018

james halliday's wine companion 2014Winemaker Summary

Schoolteacher-turned-winemaker Lindsay McCall has shown an absolutely exceptional gift for winemaking across a range of styles, but with immensely complex Pinot Noir and Shiraz leading the way. The wines have an unmatched level of success in the wine shows and competitions Paringa Estate is able to enter, the limitation being the relatively small size of production of the top wines in his portfolio. His skills are no less evident in contract winemaking for others. Exports to the UK, Canada, Denmark, Ukraine, Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Japan. Winery of the Year 2007 Wine Companion.

Wine Ratings

Estate Pinot Noir 2015

So heady you'll swoon with the blend of exotic spice, pomegranate juice with the usual dark cherries and pips and radicchio bitterness. There's exuberance of fruit on the beautifully weighted palate - medium-bodied, precise tannins with fine acidity to close. Rating 96 To 2028

Robinson Pinot Noir 2015

For a number of years, Paringa Estate has sourced fruit off Hugh Robinson's meticulous vineyard at Tuerong and in ?14 made the first single vineyard wine. This follow up is a humdinger. Mid-garnet and awash with dark cherries, damp earth, musk and woodsy spices with raw-silk tannins and a plushness on the palate.Rating 95 To 2026

The Paringa Pinot Noir 2014

The lighter colour is deceptive for it bursts with aromatic life: red cherries, satsuma plums, joss stick, cinnamon quills and menthol. The palate is svelte, with velvety tannins and Angostura bitters on the finish. Ultimately, quite ethereal. Rating 95 To 2026

The Paringa Shiraz 2014

Dark purple-red; not quite as peppery as the Estate as there's more fruit weight to buffer the spice rack of aromas, with a touch of ferrous and iodine. A mix of sweet tangy plums, stewed rhubarb with the French oak barriques, 40% new, adding woodsy spices and char, and neatly paired into the wine. Full-bodied with a bolt of tannin and plenty to like. Rating 95 To 2028

The Paringa Chardonnay 2015

Always a richer style with ripe stone fruit, creamed honey, smells of chicken stock, gingery, lemony acidity and creamy. Fuller bodied, there's richness, length, and layers of flavour, yet counter intuitively, a really tight palate. Rating 95 To 2025 $20

Peninsula Shiraz 2015 *

Contract-grown, co-fermented with 5% viognier, matured for 11 months in used French barriques. The fragrant bouquet has a clear lift from the viognier, the juicy collage of spice, pepper, black fruits and plum seamlessly joined with fine, but firm, tannins. Rating 94 To 2030

Peninsula Pinot Noir 2015 *

Sourced from three leased Red Hill vineyards plus other growers; 100% destemmed fruit fermented in open 2.5-tonne lots, 21 days on skins, matured for 11 months on lees in French barriques. Light, bright and clear crimson-purple; the multifaceted bouquet leads into a succulently fruited cherry and plum palate surrounded by gently briary tannins, the two parts combining synergistically. Likely to be formidably good by '20. Rating 94

Estate Chardonnay 2015

Richly flavoured with creamed honey, stone fruit and figs, it's fuller bodied with loads of texture and depth. Ginger spice, woodsy and really textural more plump, ripe fruit on the palate with some lemony zest. There's a lot to like. Rating 93 To 2025

Estate Pinot Gris 2015 *

Mostly inoculated yeasts and fermented in stainless steel to retain fruit purity with one-third wild ferment in barrel, which gives this an edge by way of texture and creaminess. It also has a lovely network of spice from ginger, cinnamon to star anise with poached pear flavours. Rating 92 To 2021
